Everything You NEED to Know About EMS

It’s not just collagen that falls victim to the aging process, from our 20’s onward, muscle tone and firmness begin to decline due to external factors, lifestyle and just plain aging. It is estimated that muscle mass decreases 3-8% every 10 years after we reach 30, and unfortunately these stats apply to the face just as they apply to the body.

But if a full blown facelift doesn’t sound very appealing to you (and trust me you’re not alone), there are other effective ways to rebuild muscle and prevent volume loss as we age.

Just as we boost collagen with several skincare techniques, we can also take steps to slow down the muscle loss without resorting to surgery.

What is EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)?

Electrical muscle stimulation is a treatment that works by delivering mild electrical impulses to treatment areas such as the face. The pulses target specific muscles (the face has 43 alone), essentially providing your face with a gentle workout. The muscles expand and contract to enhance tone, strength and movement of the facial structure.

Electrical stimulation breathes new life into skin by boosting overall circulation and skin health, from beyond the primary layers of the skin to the muscle underneath.

Just as we emphasize the importance of working out muscle groups in the body through strength training, HIIT, pilates and yoga, so too should we apply the principles of fitness to our face.

At-home EMS devices can be particularly useful as part of an overall anti-aging regime as they are one of the only technologies that can target facial muscles, an essential substructure for maintaining a youthful and lifted complexion.

What Are the Benefits of EMS for Skincare?

How EMS facials work shouldn't be a mystery, it is a comprehensive treatment option with many benefits including

  • Boost circulation - notice a radiant glow as regular EMS treatment helps improve blood flow to your skin.
  • Illuminate and revitalize complexion - aids in rejuvenating your skin, promoting a more youthful and vibrant appearance.
  • Smooth and even out skin tone - helps enhance the texture and uniformity of the skin’s surface.
  • Strengthen and tone facial muscles - mainly helps to strengthen and tone your facial muscles, contributing to a more contoured and lifted appearance.
  • Achieve a lifted and sculpted appearance - lift and sculpt your facial features, promoting a more defined and youthful aesthetic.

Does EMS Enhance the Absorption of Skincare Products?

EMS not only tones facial muscles but also enhances skincare absorption. The concentrated electrical pulses aid in infusing active ingredients deep into the skin. Facial pores are prized to soak up the nourishing and hydrating properties of your skincare favorites

How to Use an EMS Wand on the Face

EMS facial device for at home use will usually come in the form of a handheld wand  Here are some recommended movements to guide you during your EMS wand session:

  1. Jawline - Begin by placing the wand on your chin and gently pinch. Hold this position for 3 seconds, then sweep the wand towards your ear. Also, sweep under the chin towards the back of the ear.
  2. Neck - move to the collarbone area, place the wand there, and lift it towards your ear.
  3. Chin - start underneath your chin and sweep the wand upwards towards your mouth.
  4. Mouth - press the wand over your lips and glide it towards your smile lines.
  5. Cheek - starting at the jawline, lift the wand towards your cheekbone, and then sweep it towards your ear. Additionally, start from the smile lines and scoop the wand along the cheekbone.
  6. Eye Area - gently glide the wand from under your eyes towards your temples.
  7. Brow - sweep the wand from the front of your brow towards your forehead. Then, glide it from the middle of your brow towards your forehead, and finally from the brow tail towards your forehead.

How Often Should an EMS Device Be Used?

As with any treatment, it is important to establish a regular routine to better achieve your desired goals. Consistency is key for immediate and lasting results.

In general, most at-home EMS devices can be used several times a week, and some people even benefit from daily use. The duration of each session will vary depending on the specific area you're targeting. For instance, treating smaller areas like the jawline typically takes around 5 minutes, while larger areas such as the inner thighs or abdomen may require up to 10 minutes. As with any new technology, exercise caution when starting out, starting with lower intensity and duration.

How Safe is At-Home EMS?

Electro Muscle Stimulation for skin tightening is generally considered a very safe at-home treatment option. Always make sure you are purchasing from a reputable brand and have considered any contraindications that may apply to you.

To ensure safety, the electrical current used in at-home EMS devices is very mild and should not cause any discomfort. Some general contraindications include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Epilepsy
  • Heart disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Use of a pacemaker

Always consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns or specific medical conditions before using an EMS device at home. Remember to prioritize safety and consult with a medical professional if you have any doubts or questions about using EMS at home.

We know we might be biased, but if you are interested in investing in an EMS device this spring, we have just launched our cutting-edge Reva Instant Age Renewal Wand Reva combines 5 anti-aging technologies, including EMS. We are hugely proud of this cutting edge device unlike any other on the market. It is clinically proven to deliver remarkable anti-aging results through therapies including muscle stimulation, collagen induction therapy, cellular rejuvenation and skincare infusion therapy.

The Takeaway, Is an EMS Device Worth it?

EMS facials harness the power of mild electrical currents to penetrate the skin and stimulate facial muscles into contracting and expanding, just like a workout. This particular technique is especially beneficial for those concerned with sagging or loose skin, as targeted muscle groups have naturally weakened due to the aging process.

Beyond the incredible lifting and sculpting effects, EMS treatment offers a range of additional benefits. It promotes better blood flow, enhances facial contours, and smooths the texture of your skin. Moreover, EMS assists in skincare penetration by stimulating the pores.

While daily use is generally acceptable, it's essential to allow your worked-out facial muscles to relax and recuperate for a few days to promote proper recovery. The recommended duration for EMS treatment varies depending on the targeted area, typically ranging from five to ten minutes.

In the world of anti-aging, we are increasingly looking for safer, cheaper and less invasive alternatives to elaborate procedures with dubious results. On our mission to bring you just that, EMS is just one of the most powerful beauty techniques for expert at-home skin tightening.
